Since getting into the water quality improvement industry in 1982, I believe that hotels and restaurants experience the greatest economic advantage that these systems have to offer.
- Reduces housekeeping and maintenance labor costs
- Reduces costly plumbing repairs caused by mineral buildup
- Cuts scaling damage to ice machines, air conditions and other appliances
- Reduces efficiency robbing mineral scale buildup in water heaters
- Extends the life of linens
- Makes soaps and detergents go further
- Provides sparkling silverware and glassware
- Lightens your staff’s workload
- Provides guests with a luxury they’ll come back for
- Gives you an advantage over hard water motels and hotels
- Can pay for itself through savings it generates
For hotels, a study performed by The Water Quality Research Council for six (6) Chicago area hotels ranging in room size from 26 to 275 rooms, proved that the installed cost of the equipment amortized itself within the first year of operation. What investment can you make today that would GUARANTEE a 100% “Return on Investment” every year?
The systems generated savings in the following areas:
- Maid Service
- Cleaning Supplies
- Plumbing Repairs (boilers, steam generators, heaters)
- Miscellaneous (air conditioning, ice machines and swimming pool maintenance)
The conclusions of the manufacturers’ sponsored study are:
Water softeners for motels with water of 8 to 21 grain hardness (the hardness range in the study) can pay for themselves in about one year through savings in maid service, cleaning supplies, plumbing repairs and miscellaneous items such as air conditioning, ice cube machine and swimming pool maintenance. Savings in areas with harder than 21 grain water could be expected to be proportionately greater.
Motels with 100 guest rooms or more, the report claims, can expect savings of 6% to 18% in these items when compared to the same costs using hard water. Motels with fewer guest rooms can realize even greater savings, ranging in the study from 11% to 29%.
The reaction of guests to softened water is claimed to be consistently favorable.
The fact that the water of certain regions of the country is, for the most part excessively hard, when compared with water of other regions, makes the problem of great economic importance. For years municipalities and industrial concerns have known the expense of financial waste due to hard water and at the same time have taken advantage of some method of softening the water.
The terms “hard” and “soft” are in common use when speaking of water. These terms are only relative, however, and the interpretation placed upon them varies with the individual and with the section of the country from which he comes. If an Eastern resident were to speak of hard water, he would mean from 4 grains per gallon (one grain/gal is 17.1 PPM or Mg/L) while a person from the Midwest would mean water containing at least 20 to 30 grains of hardness per gallon. Hard water is an annoyance and it is expensive, too.
This is because the dissolved minerals have to be overcome by using 4x more cleaning products, more energy, more coffee, tea, juice, more maintenance and more time is needed to clean bathrooms. Softening saves time and money, and, guests’ reaction is consistently favorable.
If you are considering a softener for your hotel/motel, after performing your homework, you will find out how valuable it will be to your “bottom line”.
